Local programs looking for tutors, mentors

Campus News News

PVCC students interested in mentoring and tutoring will be pleased to hear that the FISH (Friends In Schools Helping) and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) programs are looking for new recruits. FISH has its volunteers working with elementary students in clubs, activities and after school programs.

“Over 75 PVCC students, faculty and staff have served as tutors through this program in the last four years,” said Hughey-Commers, coordinator of Workforce Service’s Piedmont Futures program. The AVID program, held at Jack Jouett Middle School, focuses on middle school students by working directly with their teachers.

“Tutoring is a great way to give back to the community, gain experience in an educational setting and build a resume,” said Hughey-Commers. “As a tutor, you work with individuals or small groups of students who are practicing important academic skills. PVCC students can choose from a variety of different schools and tutoring times, including during the day and after-school.”

FISH training will be provided on Sept. 19 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the North Mall Meeting Room.  AVID training is held at Jack Jouett Middle School Sept. 18 through Dec. 20 for the first semester, and Jan. 8 through May 30 for the second. Both programs require tutors to commit to one hour per week, provide their own transportation and pass a background check.
