Need a class for Fall 2026?
This fall, students at PVCC will have an exciting opportunity to explore their creative sides through the course ENG 211, Creative Writing. This class offers a dynamic and engaging introduction to the art of storytelling, poetry, and character development. Whether students are seasoned writers or beginners eager to discover their voices, this course aims to inspire and challenge them to think creatively and express themselves confidently.
According to the course instructor, Professor of English Jennifer Koster, “The goal is to expose students to diverse styles and help them find their voice.” She emphasizes that creative writing is not only about developing technical skills but also about discovering personal expression. The class is designed to be both fun and inspiring, encouraging students to experiment with different forms of writing while reading a variety of literary works.
“Creative writing is fun! We play with different forms and read a lot, which helps improve writing skills,” Koster explains. This playful approach helps students build confidence and discover what kinds of writing resonate most with them.
One of the key objectives of the course is to help students become more attentive to the world around them. Through capturing moments in characters, stories, and images, students learn to see their environment in new and meaningful ways. This heightened awareness fosters a more engaged perspective on daily life and encourages students to find inspiration in everyday experiences. As they develop their storytelling skills, students also cultivate a deeper understanding of human nature, emotion, and the power of words to connect and communicate.
Beyond fostering creativity, the course offers practical skills that can extend into a variety of future careers. Students learn techniques for generating ideas, developing narratives, and refining their writing. “Creative writing teaches you how to express yourself well, which is useful in many professional settings,” says Koster. The ability to craft compelling stories and communicate effectively is an asset in almost any field, making this course not only an artistic pursuit but also a practical investment in students’ futures.
The class is a 3-credit course scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30-2:50 p.m. It offers a supportive environment where students can share their work, receive constructive feedback, and grow as writers. The focus on invention and sharing creates a community of learners who are eager to explore their creative potential. Whether students aim to publish their work, improve their academic writing, or simply enjoy the process of creation, ENG 211 provides a rewarding experience.
