Career Services resources for students in quarantine

Campus News News

With COVID-19 sweeping the nation and many restaurants, stores, and nonessential workplaces shutting down, unemployment claims are at a record breaking high. However, many students’ bills still need to be paid, rent is still due, and refrigerators are in need of a restock.  It can be difficult to look for a job in such a stressful time, but PVCC’s Career Services is here to help.

The Career Services page on PVCC’s website was already full of resources for students looking for work – but due to the coronavirus, there are recent additions tailored to finding a job during the pandemic. Recently added are a section for remote and freelance job opportunities and a spreadsheet of local employers sorted by industry.

According to Gigi Davis, the job & internship coordinator for PVCC, these new resources are geared towards making it easier for students to be proactive in their job search and are only some of the many things Career Services is doing to connect students to employers. Davis touched on the extensive partnerships Career Services has maintained.

“We partner with the local Chamber of Commerce, Virginia Career Works, Charlottesville Downtown Job Center, Albemarle County Public Schools, Charlottesville Business Innovation Council, Society for Human Resource Management, Charlottesville Women in Technology, and Shift/Enter to expand our employer connection,” Davis said.

Davis also covered the virtual help Career Services offers for students who want some help getting ready to apply for a job.

“Career Services is still readily available to help students virtually with their resume, cover letter, interview skills, etc.,” Davis said. “ It’s easy to make an appointment by visiting the online appointment scheduler.  Both André Luck, Career Services Manager and I are happy to meet via Zoom, phone call or email – whichever the student is most comfortable using.”
