Gemini Love is an indie rock group that formed in Richmond, Virginia. They released their first EP, What’s my porpoise in May. The members of the band are Matt Burton, Coty Heiser, Sebastian Martin, and Mark Jones. I was lucky enough to sit down and talk with the band about their recent EP.  The discussion was mainly about their music and what it really takes to be a musician. The band was completely open minded and had no problem with being themselves during this interview. They were not afraid to answer any question and always managed to have something to joke about to calm the nerves of everyone.

Jones and Heiser started the band a couple years ago  with Heiser on the drums and Jones on vocals and guitar.  Burton noticed they needed a bass player and ended up joining the band. Martin was the last one to enter the band a year later when Jones asked if he was willing to be their guitarist and keyboardist, and Martin happily agreed. The “bromance” between the four makes it seem like they grew up together.

Gemini Love have been working on the EP for over a year. This included many attempts and even a change in location for it to sound just the way they wanted. The EP is now available on their website and iTunes. Their goal was to get a different sound inspired by many other famous musicians and personally I feel like they have succeeded.

“All of us have similar taste in music, but everyone kind of has a different background with music too. So it’s kind of cool to get those different styles together and see what you can come up with,” Burton said on the topic of finding their sound for the EP. Gemini Love have the same similarities with hit bands such as All Time Low or Iron and Wine, but still manage to keep their originality.

When asked what advice they would give to aspiring musicians, Jones quickly answered by comparing music to marriage, “You have to make sure it is the one. Make sure you’re really in love with this.”

Later in the week I managed to see Gemini Love perform live. This performance took place at Emilio’s, a bar packed full of people ready to enjoy live music. While they were performing the band seemed very content and even messed around with the crowd for a bit. By the enjoyment on their faces and the way their music echoed through the bar, it was clear they were meant to be a band.

Gemini Love has several shows coming up around the area. On Saturday, Sept. 17. they will be playing at the Autumn Trails Veterinary Center in Charlottesville at an event called the Wagging Tales Festival. The venue will open at 1 p.m. and is free.

The band is progressively reaching larger audiences and  could not be more proud of themselves. Their dedication is outrageous and shows how much they truly want to be successful. All four members balance jobs, families, and the band. The members of Gemini Love are passionate. When asked, if they could replay their lives would they still choose to be a band, they all cheered “Yes,” knowing exactly what obstacles they would have to face. I look forward to finding out what the future holds for Gemini Love. Down below is a link to their EP!
