Learn more about PTK
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is the nation’s leading honor society for community colleges. They strive to help students by supporting them to achieve academic success and personal development, with a mission rooted in recognizing achievement and creating new opportunities. PTK offers a comprehensive platform that helps students succeed beyond the classroom.
Membership in PTK begins with students being acknowledged for their academic accomplishments. Eligible students at PVCC are invited to join during the fall and spring semesters. To qualify, students must meet specific criteria: those with 12-30 credit hours and a minimum GPA of 3.50 enrolled full-time, or students with over 30 credit hours enrolled full-time or part-time with at least a 3.25 GPA. Names of students are submitted to PTK’s national headquarters, which then sends an email invitation containing a unique registration code to complete the process online.
For students who want to learn more or who are not yet eligible, a provisional membership application is available. Students can submit this paper form to a chapter adviser and attend PTK meetings or events to explore membership options and decide when they are ready to join fully.
PTK members enjoy numerous benefits that support their academic and professional journeys. These include scholarships, leadership development programs, career resources, and exclusive networking opportunities. According to the website for PTK, the organization’s recognitions stand out on college applications, scholarship submissions, and résumés, giving students a competitive edge. Dean Decker, Senior Adviser for PTK, said: “Watching students grow in maturity, confidence, and optimism as they prepare to transfer to four-year schools is incredibly fulfilling. Seeing their excited anticipation for future challenges truly makes my role special.”
Research-based programs provide members with access to professional development courses; live webinars on current topics; and PTK Connect, a tool offered to PTK members that is used for college transfer and scholarship searches. Financial aid assistance is also offered through various scholarships, including transfer, need-based, and competitive awards, easing the financial burden of higher education. The organization also provides resources like FAFSA Mentor, which guides students through financial aid applications. Students can learn more about these opportunities when they search the PTK website or when they attend the monthly PTK meetings that are held on campus.
The community is at the heart of PTK and encourages students to engage in leadership roles, service projects, and community involvement. These experiences help develop vital skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, traits essential for future success. Students have opportunities to connect with peers, participate in regional and international events, and attend the annual PTK Catalyst conference, the most recently held in Baltimore, Maryland. Maria Klaira Amethyst Bragado, the vice president of fellowship for PTK, emphasized the community aspect: “The biggest opportunity PTK has opened for me is friendship. Active engagement helps you find your people. I’ve been in PTK for three years and have made lifelong friends through this organization.”
