Clubs Events

At PVCC’s Spanish Club, students can fill their college hour with games, music, and fun. For instance, for El Dia de los Muertos, a club member took the opportunity to present her talents with the guitar by playing a Spanish song while other members got to sing along.

Run by Professor of Spanish Dr. Jorge Grajales-Díaz, Spanish Club is an opportunity for students to learn and experience Spanish language and culture. Often at the beginning of the semester, Grajales-Díaz will motivate students to attend the club fair and talk about Spanish Club as well.

Grajales-Díaz describes it as a “pretty easy-going club.” They meet every first Monday of the month in D334 during college hours to talk about anything and to practice speaking in Spanish.

The club often gets together to do activities such as coloring while listening to Spanish background music, playing various games such as Codigo, Secreto (Sacred code), Loteria, and Bingo

The club also sometimes goes out to Hispanic restaurants for meals that the club pays for. Members can eat, talk, and interact in a Hispanic environment. Club member and PVCC student Maryliz Andere expresses how fun “it was to practice Spanish outside of the classroom environment, which is eventually the goal.” She says, “It was helpful to practice talking to each other in a casual way in Spanish, which we already do in the club, though speaking with other native speakers at the restaurant was good practice too, and really enjoyable. Practicing real life conversation is an important aspect of learning a second language, and this provided the perfect opportunity to do so!”

Every year, the Spanish Club also goes to a Hispanic play created by UVA Spanish Theater Group. Some members of the club give short presentations in Spanish about their trips or experiences of visits to any of the Hispanic speaking countries as well.

Students of all levels are able to join. Learning and communicating is what the Spanish club is all about, along with creating friendships and supporting one another.

Grajales-Díaz also says, “If [students] are taking my class and they attend at least three times, then they get extra credit for that.”
