PVCC Soccer Club Takes Home Double Against CVCC
This spring, the PVCC Soccer Club played two exciting games against the Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) Soccer Club. The first game was at home. On Saturday, March 29, the CVCC Soccer Club made the drive from Lynchburg to play PVCC. For the Panthers though, gameday began before the first whistle. Members of the Soccer Club volunteered to spend their Friday evening helping Club President Theo Staengl measure, line, and mow the soccer fields to get them ready for game day.
Staengl said that it ended up being “a great time,” and that above all he loved seeing “the team come together to get the fields ready in what was a great moment and a wonderful example of what makes the Soccer Club so special.” The game itself ended in an exciting win for PVCC. After PVCC conceded an early goal in the opening minutes, Staengl scored an equalizer. CVCC responded with two more goals, leaving PVCC down 1-3 at the half. What followed was nothing short of an incredible comeback, with PVCC players Mamady Fofana and Esrat Ahmadi scoring to equalize once again. It was Theo who got the game winning goal to seal a Panther victory with a final score of 4-3.
A few weeks later, on Saturday, April 12, the PVCC Soccer Club drove down to play CVCC for the away game. The first fifteen minutes of the game was dominated by PVCC, who created a lot of team chances before finally breaking through the deadlock to score two goals, both from striker Richard Toe. CVCC started the second half strong, and managed to get a goal back, making the scoreline 1-2. The scoring was not over, as PVCC immediately responded with a beautiful passage of play and some strong possession to score a third goal, a tap in from Mustafa Kazimi. Alan Marquez-Carlos scored a fourth goal for PVCC. CVCC scored a second goal, and an own goal right at the end of the game.
With a 2-5 victory, PVCC Soccer Club took home their first ever double against CVCC Soccer Club, a win against the same opponent both home and away in the same season. This marked a triumphant end to the club’s season.
When asked about his time as Soccer Club president, Staengl, who is graduating this spring, said that serving as president has “been one of my favorite parts of PVCC. It has been amazing to see the Soccer Club grow, and the amount of people who love soccer at PVCC.”
