PVCC Admissions Team provides transfer applicants assistance via Zoom

Campus News News

Before community college transfers ever decide to set foot on the campus of their dreams, the college admissions process plays a major role in determining where students will spend the next few years of their academic career. As students go through this process they are being evaluated and judged by college admissions officers around the country (in varying degrees of importance) on the merit of their academic accomplishments. For some students, this process is regarded as a joyful experience; for others, the thought of the phrase “college admissions” can be frightening. No matter which end of the spectrum a student finds themselves on, the PVCC advising staff is offering students the opportunity to flesh out their application process with the help of advisers in real time.

Every Thursday throughout the month of February, from 3-5 p.m. the PVCC admissions team is coordinating transfer-application help sessions via Zoom. The advising sessions are open to PVCC students who intend to transfer to a 4-year college or university for the fall semester of 2021. Students who attend the Zoom help sessions can expect to receive instruction from Director of Advising and Admissions Kemper Steele and fellow admissions and advising staff members.

In an open-forum style of discussion, Steele and other administrators offer commentary on the ins and outs of the transfer process. Topics discussed range from explaining what is absolutely necessary to complete a college application to advice and instruction on how best to request a formal letter of recommendation from a professor — and everything in between.

“We care about the success of our transfer students, not just while they are with us at PVCC but also as they plan for their next step in their college journey,” said Steele. “These sessions are a way for us to help our students feel less overwhelmed with the application process and reduce some of the stress involved with transfer admissions.”

While Steele and the rest of PVCC’s advising staff provide year-around services, their current focus on the transfer application process provides much needed assistance as transfer deadlines are fast approaching.

The help sessions are designed to function as a “stop-in” option for students. Students are not expected to sign-up prior to the session or stay for the allotted two hour time slot from 3-5 p.m.. Access to the Zoom link will be provided to the student body through email on behalf of The Admissions and Advising Center Team.

Additionally, the advising team recommends students utilize PVCC’s Writing Center for help with both personal statements and essays. You can schedule an appointment with the writing center by first logging into MyPVCC, clicking the “Navigate Student” icon, clicking “Appointments” and then following the instructions on the screen. You can contact the writing center at tutoring@pvcc.edu (https://vccs.zoom.us/j/81262279582).
