Why they destroyed so much art and how communities are responding.

The Syrian Civil War was a humanitarian disaster, claiming the lives of some 400,000 people and displacing hundreds of thousands more. It was also a disaster for art and archaeology. This lecture will assess explanations for why wartime iconoclasm was so severe and some of the ways that local people are rebuilding community life with (and without) cherished cultural objects and sites.

Hosted by PVCC: Division of Humanities, Fine Arts & Social Sciences.

Event Speaker: Dr. Fiona Greenland, University of Virginia
