Fans of live music will have something to look forward to at Piedmont Virginia Community College when the radio station 106.1 FM The Corner hosts this year’s “The Corner Lounge LIVE!,” featuring local acts Grey Matter and the Eli Cook Band. The show will include live performances and interviews with the bands hosted by 106.1’s Brad Savage.

After winning the Battle of the Bands held at PVCC back in the spring, Grey Matter has been given the chance to reveal their new alternative rock sound to the college community. Still, Grey Matter has not had it all easy, especially after losing a member due to a change in musical direction. “We are all extremely happy with what we’ve been doing recently and have really made an effort to produce a much more cohesive singular sound,” said Grey Matter singer and guitarist, Liam Gilchrist.

After the other winners of the Battle of the Bands had to drop out of the upcoming performance, PVCC approached local blues-rock guitarist Eli Cook to perform with self-named group.

With influences ranging from John Lee Hooker to Kurt Cobain, Cook hopes to reach out to a younger crowd. “I’m going to specifically tailor our set towards the younger audience, so it’s definitely going to be more of a rock show than a blues show. I think it would be really cool if people my age and younger came out to see the show,” said Cook.

To give PVCC students a taste for the performance, a free preview show will be held in Bolick Student Center at noon on Wednesday, Nov 16 with Cook and Gilchrist performing their own solo sets.

“The Corner Lounge LIVE!” will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19 on the Main Stage of the V. Earl Dickinson Building at PVCC. Students may get in for free with an Arts Voucher. General admission tickets are $5 and may be purchased Plan 9 Music, Sidetracks, the University of Virginia Arts Box Office or by calling the PVCC Box Office at 434-961-5376. Tickets may also be purchased two hours before the show at the PVCC Box Office window.
