In the PVCC Tutoring Center, students sit around tables, diligently working. Some tap their feet and work silently, others chat in groups, and still more are paired with tutors to review the week’s work. Although it is usually populated, it is never overwhelming, and many come simply to study in the peaceful environment.

There are 13 tutors in the center, according to Biyadunia Bulumum, better known as Mr. B., who works the front desk most days. The Tutoring Center offers both online and in-person tutoring services. Monday through Thursday, they stay open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Zoom sessions operate on the same schedule and require an appointment. Roughly 50 math, business, and science classes are covered by the tutors, with a select few embedded in specific courses. Calculators are always handy for students to borrow.

“We encourage students to do their studying here, and if they need help, someone is here,” Bulumum said. Many students need support from the tutors, he said, and walk-ins are always encouraged.

At the beginning of each semester, a staff member from the Tutoring Center visits as many classes as possible to familiarize the students with their hours and offer support. Rose, a tutor with PVCC, walked into a morning statistics class and did just that to make sure students knew where to go for help. Though it’s hard to cover every class, they extend their support as far as it will reach.

Faith Wilkerson, a former PVCC student, often used the Tutoring Center during the 2025 fall semester. “I remember my tutor always being happy to teach me when I didn’t understand. She didn’t make me feel dumb for any question I had and was very intentional about making me feel comfortable,” she said. The Tutoring Center provides educational support and builds students’ confidence in their ability to learn and understand the subjects taught.

Large groups of students in the center often study without a tutor. Working with others is a great way to learn. Bulumum says this is strongly encouraged at the center, even if you do not plan to see a tutor.

After I asked Bulumum if there was anything important I should include, he said, “If you bring food, you need to bring enough for everyone.” Though he was joking, the community environment fostered in the center is easy to spot. There is space for anyone who needs support, and the faces regularly seen at the front desk are always welcoming. Whether you need a calculator or a tutoring session, the Tutoring Center at PVCC remains an important resource for all.
