The Fine Arts department at Piedmont Virginia Community College actively endorses the art of students and other individuals in the community. Beryl Solla and Lou Haney, along with other faculty members and artists from the surrounding area, showcased the artwork on Nov. 18 for opening night of the PVCC Faculty Art Exhibit. Designated areas for the exhibit are in Dickinson Building and consist of specific artistic themes.

The world of trip art, or psychedelic art, presents exciting forms of artistic expressions with the use of fractals, hard dark lines, and highlight colors. This, coupled with black lighting, augments the viewer’s experience. This genre is not entirely new to the Fine Arts. According to Time.com, “It derives from earlier innovations of art and electronics, as well as from such old-fashioned devices as the kaleidoscope and slide projector. Some of it even incorporates ancient Oriental philosophies and American Indian lore. But what is new about the art is its complex integration of these techniques and elements as well as its overall purpose.”

Art is an extension of human expression; through the ages, generations of artists harkened to the technique and interpretation of their predecessors’ work.

Another fun theme featured in the exhibit includes various paint mediums stylized in the likeness of fruit such as cantaloupes, strawberries, and figs. Many of the pieces in this section of the exhibit could be interpreted as pop art. Professor Solla provided snack foods inspired by the works of the artists which enhanced viewing the exhibit.

In addition to the themed displays, Sculptures and other paintings of intricate detail were also on display. Some of the sculpture pieces showcase an influence reminiscent of art forms from the archaic periods.
