We Deserve to Belong

Clubs Opinion

Clubs and other organizations within Piedmont Virginia Community College afford students opportunities which would not materialize in any other manner. Our school offers more than 40 clubs to choose from, open to part-time and full-time students, and they are free. What a wonderful way to meet other students of similar interests.

The club listings in this issue would be a good place to start perusing according to established interests, or maybe even try something new. Clubs are a great way to expand or discover new passions.

Aside from individual social aspects, clubs allow for building a strong relationship with PVCC while becoming part of its community. Networking within clubs may result in finding obscure resources which could increase educational productivity or help in an assortment of other ways.

Club involvement is a great opportunity to learn team building and leadership skills and is looked upon favorably by future employers. These activities are part of building a competitive resume.

One of these clubs is The Forum. Imagine this . . . The presses are running and the pages are still warm. A sigh of relief escapes as you smile at the front page on top of the stack of copies cradled in your tired clutch.  You and your colleagues, who also had no previous experience, wrote, edited, and laid out another monthly edition of The Forum, PVCC’s newspaper.

Many skills were learned, fun was had, and friendships built. Art was created and another career opportunity presented itself. You walked in with a healthy helping of self-doubt but left knowing you are awesome. This elevates self-esteem and proves teamwork is another one of your strengths which carries through to all of life’s endeavors. This same scenario can happen in any club whether it is the Dance, Chess or Ultimate Frisbee Club.

No matter what you choose, you deserve the opportunities PVCC’s clubs offer. It is your education and your school. Make the most of your time here. Have some fun.
