Free Movie Friday: Mistress America

Arts & Entertainment Events Movies Reviews

Free Movie Friday, sponsored by PVCC’s Student Art Club, is exactly as it may sound: a free and fun weekend event. At arrival, I was greeted by a volunteer and shown to the entrances of the theater. For my first visit, I was shocked by the size of the theater and the cinematic feel. The lights dimmed and I was in for a pleasant surprise.

Mistress America was not what I expected, but a fantastic delight nonetheless. It was relevant to the average college student, since it is about a lonely college freshman seeking friendship and adventure. It takes place in New York City, giving a new perspective on what college life is like beyond PVCC. The cast, Greta Gerwig, Lola Kirke and Seth Barrish, were hilarious and brought life to the already-entertaining script.

When the movie came to an end, happy faces lit up as they discussed the interesting plot. I had the pleasure of interviewing an attendee named Nancy on what she thought of the movie.  Nancy stated, “I thought it was really great. It was funny and well written. I’m from New York so I enjoyed it.”

It is surprising how many local residents came to Free Movie Friday. A number of people heard about the movie through the local newspaper, The Daily Progress, and word of mouth. Free Movie Friday served as an excellent opportunity to bring together students and locals for a good laugh and free entertainment.
